Insure my Pet

The thought never occurred to me, until I actually saw something like this already existing in the UK consumer market. Pet Insurance is what I am talking about.

Back in India lot many people love their pets more than anyone else but haven't seen anyone getting them insured. Also to my knowledge no insurance company was offering pet insurance cover. But a little googling showed that we apparently do have some insurers that have pet insurance portfolio (pet means only dog in this case). [Source]

Coming back to UK, its a big market here. Almost every popular store that sells insurance (self or as corporate partner) offers pet insurance. And not surprisingly the policies are sold like hot cakes. One leading bank here has nice and 'lucrative' features that made me think at least once about getting a dog and buying a policy for it. Some of these features are listed below.

Up to :
£7,500 per year for veterinary fees
£2,000 for the death of your pet due to an accident or an illness.
£2,000 for the loss or theft of your pet.
£1,000 for advertising costs, should your pet go missing.
£750 for emergency kennel or cattery fees.
£2,500 should you have to cancel your holiday because of your pet.
£1million third party liability cover.
and also –Veterinary and Pet Minder Helplines

Impressive figures. More insurance cover than a person will ever have in a developing world.
People who care and can afford it have full rights to do it. And what better opportunity for companies looking for some new business. I wonder what more can we insure.. which is not covered by any portfolio yet.

Hey saw you linked to my post. Thanks.

It's been over a year since I wrote that post unfortunately the scenario still hasn't changed much here.

Anyway, good stuff.

Thanks.. you wrote that more than 2 years back.
Im amazed to see how you keep track of links to your old posts. Hope I dint infringe any copyrights :)
I think the scenario has not changed as ppl are still not ready to ensure their pets as the medical cost is not too much and a country where millions of people are below poverty line, this is no surprise.
